Your observations are very interesting and they coincide with both Mike Rose and Cornel West, so you’re in good company. Perhaps what you say is one of the reasons why we find ourselves in this kind of nebulous cloud and we’re not sure what direction to take. Where do we go to learn? is a vital question that has to be taken up along with “What are we learning?” What models do we, America, provide the rest of the world, since we are intent on being examples of right moral reasoning?

I don’t know when it was that I started feeling like Midd was more about getting getting yourself embedded in the social hierarchy of upper class America than anything else. I think the upper class in America have become so self-conscious and embroiled in self-loathing that they try to flip every bourgeois value inside out, trying their hand at every new wave of radical social change. It’s lip service at worst and sincere but misguided at best. At the end of the day, it’s all about making a 6 figure income some time down the line, where creature comforts are the last line of defense against nihilism.

Like you said, it is bleak. It’s even worse when I think for people in a country like mine, where we have so much less to live for, and look up to the American education system (or at least the ideals it represents) for any hope of positive change. We do we go to learn now?

the situation is bleak; it is dark. I can’t account for what “people” think or feel — everyone is free to determine his or her own outlook. Read this: http://hectorvila.com/2009/10/05/ohumanliberty/ It’s about the “last human freedom.” We are all always already free to determine for ourselves how to look at something, how to approach any given situation. It’s the ONLY freedom we have. To start going “this is pessimistic” and “this is optimistic,” gets us back into enclosures. Can’t we get beyond these manufactured categories and actually look at what’s really being said, which is neither optimistic or pessimistic, but is, it simply is — it’s an account?

You are representing too negative an outlook. An outlook such as that provided in your post may cause people to realize the situation of humans and strive to change it, but it could also cause people to decide to give up, with a mentality of “one person cannot make any difference, there is no point in trying”.

Yes, Annie, it is important, more so now than ever, indeed. You’re right, of course. But the noise is immense. Look at McKibben and 350.org — a movement. And it all started here, in Vermont. That’s speaking out. So I agree and see what you say. But right now, though, the forces — the immensity of the noise — is way out in front and those that you say will at some point, later, come together may find that that (a) there is no tomorrow and (b) there aren’t enough people.

If our world really is in a downward spiral of decay, isn’t it more important now than ever to voice our opinions and follow our passions to make the world just a little bit better. Optimism and hope breeds more optimism and hope. I see all around me people that are corrupted or take their life and education for granted. I am not saying that I can exclude myself from it either. But I firmly believe that in our lives we need to pursue what truely makes us happy and if slowly this takes force and influences people maybe soon we will realize what a mess we are in and will try and correct it bringing about a new era
